This past week in Language Arts: We focused on our purpose for reading, the fact that stories have parts, the setting in a story, as well as how to identify and understand new vocabulary in a story. Handwriting Without Tears focused on the letters N and R. In writing, we discussed using the word wall as a resource/tool and using spacing between our words. The word family was -it, and the word wall words were "to' and 'up".
Math: We learned about sorting, and making groups with a common 'rule' based on their attributes. We discussed how there are several ways we can sort, and also evaluated groups that were already sorted to determine the common rule. We continued to work on word problems in our math journals. Vocabulary: sorting, group, attributes
Social Studies: We continued our study of responsibilities and rules. Our focus targeted leaders, and how we make decisions. Vocabulary: leader, rule, decision, vote
Science: We learned about changes in properties, and it was full of wonderful experiments! We melted crayons with a heating tool, discovered ways to melt ice cubes that had a 'surprise' frozen in it for them to keep, and we all created an ice sculpture that we observed throughout the day. (Picture is attached....it looks like we went the abstract art route.) Our final experiment was placing Ivory soap in the microwave. The students all made the hypothesis that it would melt, so imagine their excitement when it turned into a huge 'cloud' formation! They were really thinking like scientists as we recorded the before/after for each experiment in their science journals. They also loved sharing their journal observations under the document camera for their classmates to see.
