Hi Parents-
Thanks for another great week!
Ella was our Star Student and did a great job. We can't wait to hear about Mr. Owl's weekend with her!
Project Lead the Way Module 1: Design a House was a success!! We read The Three Little Pigs and sequenced the story. We then asked questions about the functions/structures of each home. Using the design process (Ask, Explore, Module, Evaluate) we put on our engineer hats to create houses out of different structures, but with the same function goal. We used toothpicks and clay for straw houses, popsicle sticks and clay for stick homes, and dried out sponges and glue for brick homes. We waited 24 hours, and then evaluated how sturdy they were by having the Big, Bad Wolf try to blow down their houses. We then discussed what we would change next time to improve our designs, and what we would keep. I uploaded the videos of this into Seesaw. I think this may have been the highlight of the week!
The BEST part was hearing them encourage each other not to give up!! This was a bit more challenging than the beanstalks, but they remembered that their hard work would pay off...and seeing the smiles and sense of satisfaction on each of their faces was wonderful!
Our activity to bring it all together next week will be the kiddos using provided materials to design their own paintbrush. I am very excited to see them really step out of the box with their creativity!! We'll focus on the structure and function, and continue to follow the design process. Can't wait to share the results!
Updates/Reminders:
- Please send a light coat to school with your kiddo for chilly days.
- Please remember to send a healthy snack to school each day.
- RED reading folders started going home again last Tuesday. (Several have not had signatures since we returned from Winter Break, so I want to make sure you know they are coming home. They go home on Tuesdays and Thursdays).
STEM Bins this weekend:

Thanks so much for your support! Have a wonderful weekend!
