Hope everyone had a great weekend!
Last week Ali was our Star Student, and we enjoyed learning more about him! He took home our class pet, Mr. Owl, for the weekend...and we can't wait to hear all about it!
Bryden will be our Star Student this upcoming week. We'll also be celebrating Liam's birthday on the 27th!
We started the job of class photographer. I've included a few pics that Vivienne took this week. There is a designated iPad for the class photographer to use, and they are encouraged to take pictures of anything that they think would be good to share with others outside of our classroom. It's so fun seeing learning in action from their perspective!
On Wednesday, we had the author Masai Maggie visit us! The kiddos loved it!
Every Friday we meet with our Reading Buddies from Ms. Sweet's second grade class. The second graders practice the books they will read to their partners in our class all week, and prepare a fun math activity to do with them. This is a highlight of the week! I've included a few pictures of the fun!
In Math, we continued to explore with number concepts 0-5. They loved using a powerpoint presentation to work on fluency, as well as to determine how many more are needed to make 5. We worked on forming/writing the numbers 0-5. We used dice, magnetic 5 frames, and the iPads with a 5 frame app to learn and explore. We also continued problem solving in our math journals.
In Language Arts, we focused on the word wall word 'and' and the word family -ig. We targeted capital letters E and D in Handwriting Without Tears. In Writer's Workshop we discussed details, and choosing our topics. They love writing in their draft books! In Reader's Workshop we discussed how to find a good fit book. We used the iPads with the magnetic letters app to spell out the sight words we are targeting. The kids used their headphones to hear the word read back to them after they spelled it. They really enjoyed it! We also continued to work on rhyming. They worked in partners to play a "Rhyme Memory" matching game, and also enjoyed using our pocket chart to identify rhyming pairs.
In Science, we finished up our discussion of using the 5 senses to explore properties. We played 'sound bingo', used our sense of touch to describe to the class items that they pulled from a container, and we had a taste test to determine which items were salty, sweet, sour, and spicy. (That was certainly a hit!!) We then moved on to discussing using the properties of color, shape, size, and texture to describe objects.
